Socialisation is much talked about and much written and debated these days. This is also because there is more and more peer bullying in schools. But it is not only children and young people who are poorly socialised. Anti-social behaviour can be seen at every step.
What is school - an old-style, legalised school? Mateja de Laat defines it aptly and poignantly from experience: 'This may be an outrageous statement for many, but in essence, sending children to school is like leaving them under the gun. Most of us do it in good faith. But also out of habit."
I have written a lot about socialisation. In one of these texts I quoted the American psychologist Lawrence Shapiro:
"Some children seem to be socially adept from birth, while others struggle with various challenges of social acceptance......."
One of the main beliefs, perhaps even dogmas, of our society is that children need peers for healthy development. Canadian developmental psychologist Dr Gordon Neufeld argues otherwise. "Children need parents and other mature adults for healthy development, not peers."
